I have gotten a few questions about the gear oil in the Ruckus transmission. Here are answers to every question you could possibly have about the Final Reduction Gear Oil in the Ruckus.
- What weight oil goes in the final drive transmission housing?
- Hypoid gear oil #90. You can buy some right here: Pro Honda Shaft Drive Oil 80W-90 8 oz.
- How much of this oil does the Ruckus need?
- .1 liters or less than 4 ounces
- Can I check the gear oil level?
- Yes. Warm up the engine, shut off the scooter and put the Ruckus on the center stand. Remove the bolt on the transmission case. Does oil run out of the hole? If not, it needs more. Fill until oil runs out of the hole. Replace the bolt.
- How often should I change it?
- Never. There is no maintenance interval on the final reduction gear oil in the owner’s manual, and the service manual does not recommend changing the oil. The assumption is, if you disassemble the transmission case to get access to the gears or bearings, you are forced to replace the oil. That is the only time you should ever change it.
- I am a mad man and I want to change this oil. How do I do it?

I’m having a problem with oil spraying out on my rear tire; my red hose is now black and my Ruck doesn’t seem to be preforming well… Can you help?

Let me get this straight. The oil does need changing, correct? If the techs don’t do it, and it’s suggested that i not do it, it goes unchanged. i bought this scooter new, so i’m certain it’s never been changed. It has gone 50,000 Kilometers without a gear oil change. And this is OK? i have never paid for a tech to change the gear oil. i’m losing confidence in the Honda tech and other shop’s folks who have worked on the bike for me. i get the feeling i have to tell everyone specifically what to do on it or they won’t touch it. Not a good state of affairs.

I think the post above is clear–don’t change the final drive oil unless you disassemble the transmission for another reason. In that case, you must replace the oil.

Lol..I love posts like this ….never change your gear oil .? probley the same people that say run your engine oil for a year between changes ! Also same ones who bring there vehicle to my shop to replace u joints every two years because they can’t grasp the concept of a grease gun . if it were mine .every 15000 I’d change it. !

Thanks for this information.
Was going to change mine just to be sure but I didn’t open the case only put in a performance variator(3500 miles broke in proper) so I’ll check the level and top it off and be on the road that much sooner!
Oh and I didn’t get a owners manual got mine on clearance.

I own a GY6 Chinese crap (139QMB) and changed the motor oil right after 128 kilometer, about 80 miles and it was the thickest motor oil I ever saw.
I guess they fill the cheapest juice in to save money, so I am glad to have it changed.
Now I rode over 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) and I am thinking that if the gear oil is of the same cheap Chinese quality like the overly thick motor oil it would be better to change it, too.

Addendum: The reason I changed the motor motor oil that early was because throttle response was very sluggish, going full throttle it took the motor a while to rev up, especially at cold temperatures, so I had the suspicion that the motor oil may be too thick. And it was!

Today I replaced the gear oil after over 1700 kilometers and was shocked how little oil was in the gear box, only about 25 ml, just a quarter of the supposed 100 ml! And there were little metallic flakes visible.
I regret not having checked the gear oil earlier – and hate Chinese stinginess

Lucky you. The Chinese scooters come with shipping oil that is supposed to be changed before the scooter is handed over. I guess this was not done in MA case. See this video from minute 10:
