Honda recommends a 4 stroke motorcycle oil for the Ruckus scooter. The official Honda product is Pro Honda GN4 4-stroke oil (or Honda 4-stroke oil). This oil is a SAE 10W-30 (or 10W-40 in warmer climates).
More specifically:
- 4-stroke motorcycle
- SAE 10W-30 (or SAE 10W-40)
- API class SG or higher (except oils labeled energy conserving)
- JASO T 903 standard SA
Oil change notes
The oil drain plug is a 17mm bolt. Likewise, the oil strainer screen requires a 17mm wrench.
The ruckus holds .5 quarts (16 ounces) of oil. The owner’s manual says “approximately 0.6 quarts,” but half a quart will sit nicely between the upper and lower marks of the oil dipstick.

I just bought a new 2013 Ruckus back in June. I ran the conventional Pro Honda 10w30 oil as you noted . After brake in (at about 1500 miles) I changed to the same weight Pro Honda Full Synthetic oil. I’ve heard that synthetic oil lubricates better but was told to run the conventional until break in was done. What is your take on the full synthetic oil in this engine? Besides being a lot more expensive is there any downside to using this oil? Thanks, I appreciate your input.

No, Jim. Use whichever you want as long as there is oil in the engine. My scooter is run at full throttle for most trips. Synthetic oil won’t undo that wear and tear.

Thanks Corey for getting back to me in a timely manner. I like your Ruckus site and will continue to look here for any other info on my Ruckus. Thanks again.

I just put royal purple oil in my scooter and now it stalls sometimes, do you guys know why?

Sounds like you may have put in too much

I, too, have just taken delivery of a new Ruck and have been pondering the best oil question. MC oil is formulated to work with both gear boxes and wet clutches. That means no moly additives.
I have used Mobile 1 for over a decade in my cars and trucks with superb results. Unfortunately, I don’t see a Mobile1 MC oil in 10W30. Now, I am considering the merits of Honda’s GN4, HP, and HPS.
My Ruck will be a daily driver, so I want it to last.
Any thoughts?

I want to swap my Ruckus 50cc engine for a 150cc, is that commendable ?

Vincent, I have a 2012 Ruckus and have owned it for 3 years now. I run Mobile 1 Full syn in my bike. I have never used oil that is spec for MC use only. I have not had any problems or any oil use. The Ruckus motor is made to be run near or at full throttle, so just use a good oil and ride the thing. It is a Honda and will last like a Honda.

Salutations everyone,
My Ruckus is approaching 5k. I’ve noticed a drop from 45 mph (new) to nominal cruising speed of 38 mph. This is a drop of around 16% from when I bought it off the showroom floor. I suspect a valve adjustment is need, but any insight would be very helpful. This is my only ride so I am adamant about its care.
Thank you in advance,
Ben

My front moped tire slipped off the curb and we went down. After I picked it up and restarted it, it ran 2 blocks to my next destination. I wen in store… came back out at least 15 min later. Oil had leaked from somewhere. Put 10W 30 in til almost the top line on bottle. Went 2-3 mils home… going maybe 10mph…. it wouldn’t do any more than that. Next day, can’t start moped. What might be the problem?

I have a 2015 Honda Ruckus and did some research on oils and the best I found is the Mobil 1 10/40 motor oil. I came to this by way of another site that compared various oils and the Mobil 1 lasted longer in viscosity and other tests. I did not record the website so I can’t refer anyone to it but I can recommend this oil as it’s great for extended runs between oil changes. Oh, and the tests were done on motorcycles not cars.

Bello ejerce I live temperature rises up to 45/50 degrees celcious and I am not shire if 20W50 it’s the best or 10W30 I am using HONDA brand. What should I do? Help, thank you!;)
August 24, 2017 at 2:03 am
Do not use a 20/50 oil in motorcycles as it is way to thick to lube the parts when cold. The Honda brand is fine but expensive.

So just to be clear on the type of oil & how much to put in if doing an oil change on the 2015 Honda Ruckus 50cc wud u mind giving me this info again? Also I have a hard time reading the oil dip stick when just trying to check my oil level. Maybe link me to a simple oil change video? That wud be so appreciated!! Thanks , Marion

Checking oil dipsticks is easiest if the vehicle has not run or moved for 10 minutes. Pull the stick out, wipe it clean with a rag, re-insert, withdraw, and read.

Hi, I recently just put 10w-40 oil in my 2011 ruckus, and have noticed a lack of performance. The acceleration is much slower and it won’t hit it’s top speed. This is the first oil change I’ve done since I bought it a few months back. Could this be my problem or should I maybe look at other things to tune up? It did fall over of a gravel road a month back or so and I’m wondering if that accident may have caused some issues. I’m really lost as to what to do so thanks for any possible advice.

How many miles to oil change? Thanks uu
September 3, 2023 at 11:33 pm
i did my first ruckus oil change today at 750 miles…
i put about 21 0z of oil in, it came out to be slightly above the high & low area on the dip stick. i also added 1oz of seafoam to a filled tank.
this bike runs much smoother now, quicker to reach higher speeds and hold them now it seems.
the bike came out of dealer new with a slight amount of extra oil, about an 1 or 2 oz above proper oil fill area. i feel thats what was really bogging me down.
